For as much of a high as fans and players of the Buffalo Sabres felt after Tuesday’s big win over Washington, the low far surpasses that.
Buffalo went in to Saturday’s game against the Maple Leafs needing a win to stay at least tied with the Capitals for the eighth spot in the East, but for the second straight night they failed to earn even a point.
Now they trail the Capitals again by two points with three games left to go, and a far more difficult schedule.
Buffalo has to face Toronto, Philadelphia, and Boston in their final three match ups. The Capitals? Well they get Tampa Bay, Florida, and New York.
To say the odds are now in Washington’s favor is a bit of an understatement.
The Sabres have played uninspiring hockey the past 48 hours and have put their fans in a panic mode. Now the same, bandwagon fans who were praising this team three days ago are now calling for a blow up of the roster.
It needs to be stated how much the losses of Christian Ehrhoff and now Tyler Myers really hurt this team. Those two players are the backbone of the defensive corps and without them, well, the team just isn’t that good.
Ryan Miller also has looked tired the last two nights. He went from stealing games to giving up somewhat easy goals, but they can’t be all blamed on him. He needs help from his defense, which he hasn’t gotten the past two nights. They have, for the most part, left their goaltender out to dry.
Buffalo now must finish the next three games with three more points than the Capitals do. It’s a long shot, but hey, stranger things have happened.
