UB Quarterbacks Struggle As Defense Dominates First Scrimmage

Neither Joe Licata nor Alex Zordich put up big number Saturday afternoon as the Bulls defense looked very impressive.

After one week of nothing but practice, the UB Bulls held their first scrimmage of the fall on Saturday afternoon.

Entering the day, all eyes were focused on the Bulls quarterback battle between Alex Zordich and Joe Licata but it ended up being the UB defense that stole the show on the afternoon.

“I really like where we are with our defense” said UB Head Coach Jeff Quinn “[We] took the ball away, we were pursuing, stripping, the mentality, the culture, loved what I saw from our defense today.”

As the defense dominated, both quarterbacks struggled to execute offensively.

Zordich was the first of the UB quarterbacks to come out on the field. He led UB deep into the opposing territory, completing a few nice passes before ultimately watching the Bulls stall at the 25-yard line.

The drive was one of Zordich’s better ones on the afternoon as he struggled to lead the Bulls down the field.

On the day, Zordich unofficially went 6-17 passing for 85 yards, one touchdown and an interception.

“Defense got the better of us today but that’s just part of getting better” said Zordich “That’s why we’re here in camp”

Zordich’s counterpart, freshman Joe Licata threw for a higher completion percentage but also had his share of troubles on the afternoon.

Licata finished 8-14 passing for 52 yards and an interception as he displayed a tendency to throw short passes on the evening.

Licata came close to throwing one touchdown but saw his slightly high pass dropped by one his receivers breaking for the endzone.

When asked if anything has changed in the Bulls quarterback battle, Quinn was very forthright that the battle is still ongoing.

“We’re still battling at that quarterback position”, said Quinn “Nothing’s changed. We need to go back and look at where we’re at with those guys.”

Besides the quarterback battle going on, many Bulls showed flashes on the field.

  • Running Back James Potts showed glimpses of why he was once a much-heralded recruit as he showed impressive burst and nice agility.
  • Receiver Fred Lee got involved in a few plays and caught a nice15-yard touchdown pass from Zordich, the only touchdown pass of the day.
  • Defensive Back Carlos Lammons intercepted Joe Licata, making a nice break on the pass.

With the scrimmage all wrapped up, the Bulls return to practice Monday morning knowing that they have lots to work on but that they have many pieces in place.
