The first week of OTAs are over at One Bills Drive and Buffalo has plenty to be happy about. The team had strong participation from their veterans and overall the team had plenty of highlights. Before issuing out Week One OTA MVP, let’s take a look at today’s events.
Kevin Kolb led the quarterback rotation on Wednesday, followed by E.J. Manuel and Tarvaris Jackson. Nothing should be read into this as Buffalo has said they’ll be rotating quarterbacks.
Manuel was removed from the rotation the second time through, but did return during the third rotation. When the Bills did 11-on-11 work, Manuel did not receive any snaps.
Of the three quarterbacks, Tarvaris Jackson was the most impressive on Wednesday. Jackson found wide receiver T.J. Graham for a touchdown pass and made plays with his feet. Many, including myself, considered Jackson an afterthought in the quarterback competition but through the OTAs he has been the most impressive quarterback.
If Jackson continues to play well, he may be the quarterback competing with E.J. Manuel for the starting job.
The defense made many plays at Wednesday’s practice. The Bills’ 2012 first round pick Stephon Gilmore was the best defender on the field as he prevented two touchdowns. The first pass breakup came on a Kevin Kolb pass intended for Chris Hogan. Gilmore got a hand on the pass and was able to knock it away. Later, Gilmore ripped what should have been a touchdown pass away from T.J. Graham.
Jonathan Meeks and Vernon Kearney also had pass breakups.
In terms of sacks, second year cornerback Ron Brooks was credited with a sack on Kolb. Jarron Gilbert also registered a sack during the practice.
The only interception was made by Da’Norris Searcy on a pass intended for Lee Smith.
The MVP of the three day OTAs goes to T.J. Graham. In 2012, Graham did not have the greatest of rookie seasons, but the quarterback play didn’t help his case.
During OTAs Graham was Buffalo’s most consistent player on the field. He made many big catches and showed a willingness to run across the field. Hopefully Graham carries this momentum with him throughout the off-season. If utilized correctly, Graham could be another playmaker in Buffalo’s arsenal.
