UPDATE 2/8 10:30am via Michael Straw: After multiple unsuccessful attempts to reach the offices of Ryan Fitzpatrick’s agent directly, a representative for James Sexton finally spoke on the situation. However, she didn’t divulge into much of anything.
In a message, albeit very brief, to Queen City Sports, Sexton has simply refused to directly comment on the matter at this time.
Take that as you will. It could simply mean that he has in fact been contacted by the organization about his client’s contract, and he is just waiting for the proper time to talk about the situation. Or, he may feel it’s not his place to talk about it right now.
No one will know for sure without speaking directly to the man himself, but needless to say, there is more to this story.
UPDATE 2/7 2:45 via Michael Straw: We have contacted the offices of Ryan Fitzpatrick’s agent in hopes of getting more details about the situation. We were told he was out to lunch at the time, and we will hear from him later today.
We will have more on the story shortly.
Original Report: As reported on Twitter, Ryan Talbot of Queen City Sports has learned that the Buffalo Bills have contacted Ryan Fitzpatrick’s agent to discuss restructuring his contract.
As it stands now, Fitzpatrick is in line to earn $4,250,000 in base salary for the team. His signing bonus gives him $2,000,000 and a miscellaneous bonus of $4,200,000. In all, Fitzpatrick’s cap hit for the 2013 season is $10,450,000.
Fitzpatrick has struggled mightily since signing an extension in 2011 for six years and $59 million. After starting the 2011 season with a 4-2 record, Fitzpatrick has gone 8-18 since.
While there is no word on what Fitzpatrick plans on doing in terms of restructuring, he may not have many other options available to him. Looking across the NFL landscape, Fitzpatrick wouldn’t have many opportunities to start besides Buffalo.
It’s almost a certainty that Buffalo will be drafting a rookie in the 2013 NFL Draft, but with the Bills, Fitzpatrick will most likely be given the chance to compete in training camp to be the starting signal caller for the Bills.
